I
IntervallumThe intervallum are a race of sapient starships capable of limited shapeshifting, possibly created by another race too long ago for anyone to really remember, including the intervallum themselves. Their bodies are comprised of sleek black steel that behaves in a manner almost similar to liquid or flesh; it is pliable and soft, able to move of its own accord like skin, but at the same time hard and sturdy like steel, possessed of the ability to change its shape to a certain degree. An intervallum is cool to the touch, but not cold, as they generate their own heat from inside. Their wings and tails are lined with solar panelling of a single colour per individual that glows brighter when the indivual is experiencing heightened emotion.
In deep space, an intervallum will allow its more conservative form to fall for more alien designs, delighting in the shapes it can impose on itself if it so chooses. When on land, an intervallum will adopt a more mobile form, its wings arcing back into long arms that make the creature look like a giant mechanical bat. The intervallum don't actually exist fully in our plane of reality, part of their being remains tethered to a higher dimension and their shapeshifting, in effect, is the process of changing the shape of their third dimensional shadow that we see and interact with. If spooked or otherwise threatened, an individual will instinctively flit out completely to the higher dimension, seeming to vanish in the blink of an eye.
Sometimes an intervallum will prefer to speak to someone with a less imposing form, or otherwise explore an area much too small for the huge creature to navigate. In such a case, they can and often will engage in a smaller holographic avatar, contolled in the same way a person would play with a remote controlled car. Smaller and easily customizable, it's easy for some people to forget the real being they're speaking to remains docked in a hangar somewhere, pretending to sleep while its mind wanders with its holographic avatar.
The intervallum communicate with each other via radio frequencies and dream on the same channels. Though low tech, a simple radio can in fact catch these dreams and chatter if you can tune in on the right frequency. When far from home, an individual will keep in contact with deep space radio relays, though they are used to months of complete silence if a trip ends up taking longer than usual. Highly sociable creatures, they tend to congregate and flock to one another, even complete strangers, if they find another of their kind nearby, and enjoy sharing stories of their adventures across the cosmos.
Intervallum don't have an actual language. Though they communicate via radio frequency, if you were to tune in all you would hear is strange alien chittering. They share emotions, images, and feelings when they communicate with one another, and their personal names reflect that. Names are precious, special things to the intervallum and they treat names with utmost respect. Though their names are abstract, nebulous explosions of feeling and wonder, they can be translated for other races, usually to the effect of becoming long, rambling descriptors rather than traditional names.
An example of intervallum names include: Lonely Moonlet Behind the Stars, Breath of Wind in the Vaccuum of Eternity, or Speak Not When all we do is Whisper.
